Top 10 Worldwide Monuments: Christopher Columbus

“In fourteen hundred ninety-two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue…” Born in Genoa, Italy, a sea voyager by the name of Christopher Columbus set sail with three small ships (Santa Maria, Pinta and Nina) for the East Indies only to mistakenly drop anchor on an island in the Bahamas he dubbed “San Salvador” on October 12, 1492. This first ever (widely publicized) discovery of the Americas is nationally celebrated as Columbus Day in the U.S., Día de las Culturas (Day of the Cultures) in Costa Rica, Discovery Day in the Bahamas, Día de la Hispanidad and Fiesta Nacional in Spain, Día de las Américas (Day of the Americas) in Uruguay and Día de la Resistencia Indígena (Day of Indigenous Resistance) in Venezuela.

Today hundreds upon hundreds of statues and monuments stand tall world-wide in honor of the ambitious sailor, Christopher Columbus.
