From East to West Coast, Your Top Memorial Day Weekend Getaways

Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for those who have served our country. Observed as the last Monday of May, families and friends gather to kick-off the summer. There are plenty of places that can be visited for the long Memorial weekend, whether it be soaking up some sun in Miami or celebrating in New York for Fleet Week with the men and women who have fought for our country.

Miami, Florida
Enjoy the beautiful beaches in Miami! The warm, scenic sands of South Beach are every tourist’s top choice when visiting Miami. The beach is located on Ocean Drive, across the street from many of Miami Beach’s famous nightclubs. Another beach to visit would be Virginia Key Beach – located right off the Rickenbacker Causeway near the Miami Seaquarium.

Memorial Weekend in Miami has been dubbed “Hip Hop Week”. The Best of the Best International Music Festival is taking over the entire Memorial Day weekend in Miami, being hosted by hip-hop superstar Diddy. The opening event will take place at Opium Nightclub at the Seminole Hard Rock in Hollywood.

Washington D.C., White House/Downtown
Visit the capitol of our great country – Washington, DC. PBS sponsors a free concert on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol. The even takes place Sunday, May 30, 2010, 8 p.m. Gates open at 5 p.m. 2010 performers to be announced. The Memorial Day Parade of Marching Bands and Veterans runs along the corner of Constitution Avenue and 7th Streets, NW and proceeds along Constitution Avenue, past the White House, ending at 17th Street. Parade starts at 2PM on Monday, May 31st.Veterans from all 50 states will be marching down for the event.

New York, New York
New York City: Where the men and women of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps show off their uniforms marching down Broadway with much pride. The Memorial Day commemoration is a highlight of the week’s festivities, featuring performances from the men and women of the military. Also, military aircrafts fly over in honor of those who lost their lives in service to the United States. Fleet Week features extensive military demonstrations, as well as the opportunity for the public to tour some of the visiting ships.

Make sure to take a peek at the Intrepid Sea Air Space Museum, a 900 ft. long flight deck with an amazing aircraft collection. What used to be one of the most successful ships in US history is now one of the most popular attractions in New York City.

Chicago, Illinois
Having one of the largest parades in the country, Memorial Day weekend in Chicago is something that every traveler should experience. The annual Chicago Memorial Day Parade draws about 10,000 spectators every year, honoring veterans, active duty military personnel and those who have given their lives in service of their country.

San Diego, California

Parades, block parties, blood drives, and barbecues celebrate the lives and sacrifices made by the men and women who dedicated their heart and soul to the American military service.

While in San Diego, visit Mission Beach. Dive into the Pacific Ocean or take a stroll around Belmont Park. Offering much entertainment – from rides and games to shopping and oceanfront dining (including carnival-style corn dogs, ice cream, churros and sit-down dining featuring Mexican and Seafood) the entire family can enjoy Belmont. Also, visit SeaWorld San Diego, conveniently located near Mission Beach.
