National Police Week in Washington D.C.

National Police Week Washington D.C.“Do you know why I pulled you over?”  How we loathe these words that give us the urge to respond, “No, but you are about to tell me anyway…” Behind the pen and pad writing away the ticket that punches an impetuous hole in your wallet is a powerful man (or woman) in uniform – a police officer.

I just received one of those bad boys the other week for failing to come to a full stop at a stop sign and it ended up costing me $128 dollars after the officer downgraded the ticket I should have received ($280) to a “neglecting highway signs” ticket.

Moments such as these are unfavorable to police officers, however, we fail to address and acknowledge the heroic duties the men and women in the law enforcement practice on a daily basis, namely fighting crime and putting their lives at stake for the protection of others.

That is why each May during National Police Week the nation pauses to recognize the service and sacrifice of U.S. law enforcement in Washington D.C. This memorial was initiated by President John F. Kennedy and a joint resolution of Congress in the year 1962.

National Police Week takes place between May 9th and 15th in downtown Washington D.C.
Highlighted events include:

  • May  13th: The 22nd annual Candlelight Vigil – 20,000 people are expected on the Memorial grounds raising candles in honor of all fallen officers and hearing the names newly engraved on the Memorial walls read aloud
  • May 15th: The annual Peace Officers Memorial Day Service takes place outside the U.S. Capitol at noon
  • May 14th and 16th: The National Police Survivors’ Conference – Law enforcement survivors from all across the nation gather for in-depth grief work and issue-oriented information sharing

Other events include: a pipeband march, an honor guard competition, a motorcycle Law Ride that all take place in and around the Memorial during National Police Week. Most events are free and open to the public.
