Algarve, Portugal: From Fine Dining and Hotels to Beautiful Beaches and Relaxation, Part I

Algarve, PortugalUpon arriving in the Algarve, it is immediately apparent why it is considered to be the jewel of Portugal and one of the sunniest spots in Europe: the skies are a beautiful blue and the temperature is 22 Celsius (72F) and it was only April.

With its stretches of fine sandy beaches, an eclectic mixture of history, great bars and restaurants, and some of the best golf courses in Europe, it’s easy to see why the Algarve is rapidly becoming one of the most popular sun destination in Europe.

Our first stop was in the West of the Algarve in Portimao and Praia de Rocha. With Portimao being the main area for restaurants and some bars and shops, Praia de Rocha is a beach area where you will find the majority of hotels. For affordable options within minutes to the wonderful sandy beaches and coastline there is the large apartment complex of the 3-Star Club Praia da Rocha, a popular family resort thanks to its great beach location and large swimming pool area.

This resort has 627 apartments and is a wise choice for anyone wanting the option of self catering. Also located right on a beachfront is the 3-Star Presidente Apartments: this property is located a stone’s throw from the beach and has a shop onsite to pick up all your catering needs.

Next we head off West to the slightly more serene resort of Alvor, a perfect resort for travelers who prefer a slightly more relaxing, secluded break away from the hustle and bustle. 3-Star Clube Alvorferias offers a great break for those looking for a good family apartment complex with a good location and great facilities (Hot Dining Tip: The Portuguese steak from the bar/restaurant comes recommended).

A popular resort for the passionate golfers and romancing couples is the Pestana Dom Joao li. This resort offers luxury 4-Star accommodation in Alvor. The property backs into the wonderful long stretches of beach and a fabulous range of facilities from a large indoor swimming pool to a small volleyball/football pitch, making this resort ideal for beach-goers and those seeking an active holiday.

Check back for Part II, when we explore the beautiful areas of Carvoeiro and Albufeira and Vilamoura in our next blog post ….
