What’s Hot and Happening This Summer in New York City

Summer in the city: Window shopping down Fifth Avenue, sundresses and $5 sunglasses near Central Park, $2.25 ride on the train to cool things down and a $1 scoop of coconut ice from a cart pushed by a small elderly woman. What better place to be? There is not one day that passes where something is going on in New York City – whether it be the B-Boys by NYU or the following events, it’s all waiting for you.

The Belmont Stakes: June 5th
Held every June at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York, the Belmont Stakes is the third and final leg of the Triple Crown, following five weeks after the Kentucky Derby, and three weeks after the Preakness Stakes. Because of its distance and status as the race that can make or break a Triple Crown champion, the Belmont Stakes has been the venue for some of the most famous moments in American racing. For more information visit Belmont Stakes.

Internet Week: June 7-14
Internet Week New York is a week-long festival of events saluting New York’s thriving Internet industry and the many talented companies, organizations, and innovators creating the future of online media. Internet Week will kick off at the Hudson Theater and 3-Star Millennium Broadway Hotel at 8 am. HP will help commence Internet Week by hosting a conversation with some of the Web’s most innovative minds. Puerto Rican Day Parade: June 13th
Red, white and blue attire flooding the streets as “Que Bonita Bandera” is blaring from every store/fritter stand and any audible player. This sets up the scene for none other than the Puerto Rican Day Parade. The first parade was held on Sunday, April 13, 1958, in Manhattan, replacing the former Hispanic Day Parade. In 1995, the parade became incorporated as the National Puerto Rican Day Parade and expanded beyond the parade itself. The parade now hosts over seven major events throughout the city. The parade begins at 11 am running until 6 pm, marching along Fifth Avenue from 44th Street to 86th Street and includes delegates from various towns of Puerto Rico and U.S. states across the country. Those that have participated in the spectacular parade are Ricky Martin, Jennifer Lopez, Elvis Crespo, Marc Anthony and many other notable Puerto Ricans.

Lesbian and Gay Pride Week: June 19-27
Celebrate Gay Pride (June 19 to June 27, 2010) to honor what many consider to be one of the primary events in the history of lesbian and gay rights, the Stonewall Riots, which commenced June 28, 1969. In New York City, Pride celebrations center around five events: The Rally, PRIDEfest,The March, the Dance on the Pier, and Rapture on the River. The events all take place in the West Village, very close to the city’s other gay-popular neighborhoods like Chelsea and the East Village.

– The Pride Rally (6/19) takes place at Bryant Park

– RAPTURE: A Women’s Dance (6/26): occurs at Pier 54 featuring the music from top DJs, starts at 6 pm on and lasts until 11 pm.

– The March (6/27): Now in its 41st year, commences at noon on at 5th Avenue and 52nd Street and winds its way downtown to the intersection of Christopher and Greenwich streets. This is perhaps the must-see event of Gay Pride in New York City, drawing thousands of spectators.

– PRIDEfest (6/27): Held from 11 am until 7 pm along Hudson Street between Abingdon Square and W. 14th St.. The festive (and free) GLBT street fair features dozens of vendors, entertainers, and community organizations.

– The Dance on the Pier (6/27): Provides a grand finale for New York City Gay Pride. Thousands of GLBT revelers and friends congregate on Pier 54 (13th St. at the Hudson River) following the Pride March until a massive fireworks show at 10:30 pm. It’s one of the great gay Manhattan parties of the year.

Access to the concerts is free and available on a first-come, first-served basis outside of the Today show’s Window on the World Studio at 49th Street and Rockefeller Center. This years line up includes: Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, OneRepublic, Rascal Flatts and so many more!

Modern Family Says Aloha! at the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea

Last night, ABC’s Modern Family, which is by far one of the most hysterical sitcoms out there right now,  featured 30 minutes of laugh-out-loud comedy on the beautiful island of Maui!

While on a family trip in honor of Jay’s (a.k.a. Al Bundy) Birthday, all of the family members soak up sun and fun at the gorgeous 5-Star Four Seasons Resort Maui At Wailea.

Not only did this episode have me crying tears of joy but it also did a good job at tempting me to purchase my plane ticket to paradise and join the cast of Modern Family.  (And that temptation is still lingering, but reality keeps checking in.)

One thing’s for sure, the cast picked one of the finest hotel resorts on this island to shoot the scenes and if you’ve watched the episode (catch it on ABC) that featured plenty of shots depicting all of the hotel resort’s luxury and splendor, you will have to agree.

With its spectacular oceanfront location, an award-winning beach, superb service, dining and recreational activities, this is the ultimate resort to stay at while vacationing in Maui, Modern Family style!

Algarve, Portugal: From Fine Dining and Hotels to Beautiful Beaches and Relaxation, Part II

Day two had us heading West towards Carvoeiro a small resort where we visited 4-Star Rocha Brava, a large complex ranging from studio to 3 bedroom apartments. This property has multiple tennis courts and a good range of entertainment, making this a family friendly vacation spot.

Heading 20 minutes West across the coast we reached what is considered the hub of Algarve, namely Albufeira. Upon arriving in Albufeira it’s easy to see recognize its popularity with its mixture of the Old and New Town, little coves and beaches, great nightlife and restaurants and not to mention a large selection of hotels.

Rocha Brava, AlgarveIt’s no surprise that our first visit is to one of the most popular hotels here, the 4-StarParaiso de Albufeira. With the hotel’s extent of facilities, indoor and outdoor pools, spa, gym, kids club, large disco, 3 restaurants and an 18 hole mini golf, you needn’t leave the hotel, however it would be a shame not to take advantage of the hotel’s great proximity between the beaches and Old and New Town area.

Real Bellavista Hotel and Spa, AlgarveIf pampering is your calling, Albufeira has the Spas covered: the 4-Star Vila Gale Cerro Alagoda, 4-Star Real Bellavista Hotel and Spa and 4-Star Tropical Sol Apartments offer some fantastic Spa treatments and boast great central location.

The last day in the Algarve had us visiting Vilamoura, an ever increasingly popular part of the Algarve with the scenic Marina lined with shops and bars, large selection of golf courses (however you do need a handicap certificate to play on most) and the town center where you will find even more nightclubs and you can try your luck in the Casino.

For 5-Star luxury look no further than the Tivoli Victoria that has one of the best golf courses situated on-site and all the amenities and luxury you would expect. Vilamoura also offers many affordable, budget friendly options, e.g. the 3-Star Old Village Apartments, a great option for families and groups alike.

Upon leaving the Algarve it is easy to see why European tourists are flocking to this destination, with a great range of properties catering to all tastes and circumstance, more sun year round than California, that wonderful Mediterranean atmosphere, incredible sandy beaches and a unique blend of the Old and New.
