Puerto Rican Day Parade: June 13th
Red, white and blue attire flooding the streets as “Que Bonita Bandera” is blaring from every store/fritter stand and any audible player. This sets up the scene for none other than the Puerto Rican Day Parade. The first parade was held on Sunday, April 13, 1958, in Manhattan, replacing the former Hispanic Day Parade. In 1995, the parade became incorporated as the National Puerto Rican Day Parade and expanded beyond the parade itself. The parade now hosts over seven major events throughout the city. The parade begins at 11 am running until 6 pm, marching along Fifth Avenue from 44th Street to 86th Street and includes delegates from various towns of Puerto Rico and U.S. states across the country. Thousands of GLBT revelers and friends congregate on Pier 54 (13th St. at the Hudson River) following the Pride March until a massive fireworks show at 10:30 pm.
